Establishing a Hoplr neighbourhood is subject to a few specific regulations in order to guarantee success. Follow these guidelines carefully and your neighbourhood will thrive.
- Go to www.hoplr.com and enter your address
On www.hoplr.com you first have to enter your address. If someone already created a neighbourhood on Hoplr, you can simply register and participate.
There is no neighbourhood yet? Then you can choose to be notified when someone else sets up the neighborhood. You obviously choose the second option: you are going to set up the neighbourhood yourself!
- Follow the instructions on the website and draw your neighbourhood on the map
While drawing you can check out your surrounding neighbourhoods. Note that the borders cannot overlap. If so, an error message will be shown. Neighbourhoods have the best chance of succeeding when you include between 500 and 1500 households. Don't make it too small, but also not too big. The content has to stay relevant, a cat that escaped on the other side of town will not be of any interest to you as you won't be able to help.
Make sure you use the official boundaries of the neighbourhood or that they match the feeling of the majority of the residents. If you are not satisfied with the boundaries after drawing them, you can contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org to request a boundary change.
Give your neighbourhood a suitable name.
Choosing a solid name for your neighbourhood is almost as important as drawing solid borders. Choose a name that everyone in the neighbourhood can identify with. So don't choose the name of your own street, unless it's the beating heart of the neighbourhood. The most recognizable neighbourhood names have been historically shaped, such as 'Het Zuid' or 'Gent Sint-Pieters'. If no obvious name is available, you can, for example, combine important street names. Be creative but realistic. If you are not satisfied with the name afterwards, you can contact us at email@example.com and request a name change.
Now your neighbourhood has been created, you will have to invite your neighbours
There is only one way to invite your neighbours successfully ; send them an invitation letter. You can find this letter on the right side of your screen, there is a button 'Print the neighbourhood flyer'. We understand that it is quite a lot to ask to print out more than 500 letters, so you can always ask us for a free package of letters, and we will send it to you.
Send us an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org, provide your neighbourhood name, the number of households and the address where we can send the package to. At that time we will verify whether your neighbourhood is well established and we will possibly suggest an adjustment. When distributing the letters, it may be a good idea to ask friends or family to help you out. This will relieve the work load and it can surely be an enjoyable activity.
In addition, you can use Facebook to invite extra neighbours. The letter normally gets 10 to 15% of your neighbours to register in the first few weeks.
Last step, welcome your neighbours in your brand new Hoplr neighbourhood
You will be asked to write a short description of the neighbourhood. Make it as recognizable as possible : what makes your neighbourhood the way it is?
You can prepare a welcoming message that everyone will immediately see when going to their neighbourhood platform for the first time. As a founder/ambassador, try to welcome everyone either by liking them or even by writing them a greeting message.
So, your neighbourhood has been launched. Now it is a matter of guiding the flow of messages a bit. You can find more information about this in the section 'Neighbourhood ambassadors'.
