In the past, it was possible to register using a Facebook account. The advantage was that you didn't have to fill in extra information during registration and didn't have to remember a separate password.
Why did Hoplr break with Facebook?
Although many users had linked their Facebook account, some time ago we decided to break the connection with Facebook. We did this for the following reasons:
- Login issues: The Facebook connection often caused problems with logging in over the long term, for example when users deleted their Facebook account.
- More difficult communication: Many people use an outdated email address for Facebook, so the associated inbox was no longer checked. This made it harder for us to get important messages, for example about a neighborhood issue, to users.
- App development: Registration via Facebook imposed strict conditions on our app, which slowed down development.
- Ethical considerations: We have always guaranteed that no data from Hoplr was ever sent to Facebook. Nevertheless, we felt that Facebook’s vision and practices did not align with our values. In combination with the other reasons, we therefore severed the connection.
What does this mean for you?
First of all: it is no longer possible to register with a Facebook account. Since early 2022, it is also no longer possible to log in with a Facebook account.
In the months before this break, we tried to have as many users as possible with a linked Facebook account unlink it. If you only notice after 2022 that logging in with Facebook is impossible, you can use a 'magic link' to gain access and create a new password.
Read on this page (at the very bottom) how to do this easily.
