Why is my neighbourhood no longer active on Hoplr?

Hoplr is a free and ad-free neighbourhood network for citizens, operating on partnerships with local governments to cover costs. Without collaboration, neighbourhoods cannot be financially maintained. Costs include technical infrastructure, community management, support, product development, and general operating expenses. If you want to activate Hoplr in your neighbourhood, please contact your local authority. More information can be found on our services website.

It may happen that you notice a Hoplr neighbourhood is no longer active. That is unfortunate, as we understand you want to stay connected with your neighbourhood. However, it is important to explain why this is sometimes the case.

Hoplr is a free and ad-free neighbourhood network for citizens. We believe in a platform that does not rely on data sales or intrusive advertising, but on genuine human connection. To keep this promise and guarantee the safety and quality of our network, a sustainable business model is essential.

Why can’t we keep every neighbourhood open for free?

To keep Hoplr healthy, safe, constructive, and modern, we incur daily costs. Since we do not generate advertising revenue, we rely on partnerships with local governments to cover these costs. Without such collaboration, it is unfortunately not financially feasible in the long term to maintain the infrastructure in a specific neighbourhood.

The costs we incur to keep the platform running for you include, among others:

  • Technical infrastructure: Maintaining our servers (hosting), sending emails, and the costs for SMS verifications to ensure security.

  • Community Management: Our moderation and support to keep the neighbourhood network constructive and safe.

  • Technical support: A team ready to resolve issues and keep the app/site running.

  • Product development: Constantly improving and innovating the app to keep it modern and user-friendly.

  • General operating costs: All other operational expenses involved in running a professional and safe platform.

What can you do?

When a neighbourhood is not active, it is usually because there is (still) no collaboration with the local government in your municipality. Hoplr is a powerful tool for cities and municipalities to stimulate local dialogue and increase neighbourhood responsibility and social cohesion.

If you want Hoplr to (re)start in your neighbourhood, the fastest way is to contact your local authority (city or municipality). Ask them about their ambitions regarding digital neighbourhood networks and point out the benefits of Hoplr.

More information about our business model and how we collaborate with cities and municipalities can be found on our services website.
